Finding the Area of a Rectangle

The AREA is the space inside.


Think of an AREA RUG which covers a space. The LENGTH is the number of floor tiles covered in each row and the WIDTH is the number of rows of tiles. The AREA is the total number of square tiles covered.



Find the area:  
this rectangle is 8 feet wide and 10 feet long
Four squares in each row times three rows:
4 x 3 = 12 sq. cm. (square centimeters)

NOTE:   The area is always given in SQUARE UNITS (sq. in., or in2; sq. cm., or cm2; sq. ft., or ft2; sq. yd., or yd2; etc.) even when the space is not a square.




Which of these is the area of a room that is 6 feet wide and 8 feet long?   (Select the letter of your answer choice, then check below.)

  A)   14 feet
B)   28 feet
C)   28 square feet
D)   48 feet
E)   48 square feet
