Finding the Area of a Rectangle

The AREA is the space inside.

Think of an AREA RUG which covers a space. The LENGTH is the number of floor tiles covered in each row and the WIDTH is the number of rows of tiles. The AREA is the total number of square tiles covered.

Find the area:
	Four squares in each row times three rows: 4 x 3 = 12 sq. cm. (square centimeters)

NOTE: The area is always given in SQUARE UNITS (sq. in., or in²; sq. cm., or cm²; sq. ft., or ft²; sq. yd., or yd²; etc.) even when the space is not a square.
